September 16th, 1999

I must say, it's annoying as piss when re-installing Winblows 95 and a ton of Version Conflict messages pop up.  There's a No To All button for the question Do you wish to keep this file? but nary a sign of a Yes To All anywhere.  So, here I sit, listening to this computer beep at me every second or two, imploring me to slap the Enter key to keep going and going and going and . . .

Work has been, well, work.  Another typical September, full of playing catch-up on the oversized list of summer jobs to complete in an impossible time.  7 years running of this crap for me now.  My list of jobs to do for today includes 16 individual tasks, most of which cannot be performed simultaneously. Thus far, I have completed 6 of them and am working on the 7th. (*beep* Yes, keep the file.)  My brain has begun to resemble a mound of mashed potatoes.  I'm waiting for Richard Dreyfus to swing by and make a Devil's Tower out of it.

Overhead, the fringe cloud of Hurricane Floyd hangs above us, teasing us with the possibility of precipitation and knowing full well that hurricane leftovers rarely visit Ontario and prefer to feast on Maritime provinces instead.  The notable exception to this premise was Hurricane Hazel, 10 years before I was born.  She made a beeline from the Carolinas into Ontario and smacked the bejeezus out of Toronto before moving north by northeast and petering out in northern Quebec.

Grr, stinking install crapped out on me.  Back to square one.

We're going to remove the air conditioner from the living room window this weekend.  You know an appliance has become superfluous when an open window cools the room faster than a hunk of cooling coils and fan motors.  The cats will enjoy getting their observation post back.

With the lack of precipitation we had in July, the leaves are turning early this year.  Another few weeks and the maple leaves will be in full bloom. (*beep!* Ahem; No To All.)  Autumn is one of my favourite times of year – the crisp air, the crunch of fallen leaves underfoot, the overall feel of the season. Yum!  Last autumn, we drove to Ottawa to visit my Dad on his wife's 50th birthday.  We took the 401 most of the way up, but detoured along the 1000 Islands Parkway to see the autumn colours.  The road isn't that long – 37 km – but it the prettiest little detour to take.  The road paralleled the St. Lawrence River, giving us vistas of water, tiny islands of trees and cottages, and enough greenbelt to satisfy any soul.

Our second wedding anniversary is closing fast.  Two years! Where has the time flown to?  I think we’re going to go out for dinner on the Saturday preceding, perhaps to The Keg Mansion downtown.  On the actual day, we'll toast each other with the bottle of champagne I won in the Mr. Jack Tar contest in St. Kitts.

Oh bother.  This computer is royally fubar.

More on the contest in the next entry.
