Josie was a cowboy
Who ruled the Great Divide
Everybody kept quiet
About the way he died.
Susan was his woman
She knew all his tricks
Until one day, nine months later
He left her in a fix.
Josie junior grew up alone
Sue was raped and killed
Every time he heard his fathers name
His raged was never filled.
It was rumoured that
Josie did Susan in
After he found out he had
A brand new next of kin.
Tough and rugged, Josie junior was
With his mothers eyes
Preparing to be old enough
To avenge his mothers cries.
He followed Josie one summer day
Though Josie didn't know it
When they reached the Great Divide
Josie junior knew he'd blown it.
His father noticed him behind him
And he turned to fire
Josie junior took one in the shoulder
He knew that things were dire.
"You bastard." Josie junior said
"You killed my mother Sue."
But old Josie smiled and laughed
"Son, that's just not true."
Josie told his long tale
While his son bled
Hoping to stall long enough
Until Josie junior was dead.
But Junior had his fathers cunning
He grabbed his gun and fired
Josie burst into a pool of blood
He knew he'd gotten tired.
Over and over he shot his father
Until he lost his senses
His father, barely alive still
Knew they torn down their fences.
His dying gasp, shot one last time
Josie junior died on the spot
Then Josie senior died himself
While the vultures watched them rot.
Now no one speaks much
Of Josie or his kin
But everyone knows, to themselves
How sad they must have been.
They found the bodies, half eaten
Lying side by side
Josie and his young heir
No longer ruled the Great Divide.
