Memory In Full

You are just an old crone, who is living now alone
Your son no longer lives with you, now that he is full grown
You are shouting out obscenities at any passers-by
And to anyone's observance there is no reason why

I am just a traveller who is passing through your life
Yet I pause for reflection on your cataclysmic strife
I could be your ally from somewhere far away
But only if you would let me be your friend for today.

You can be my moonchild, the phases of my heart
I will let you weep and tell me of possessions that you've got
Your tattered doll of childhood, your lion-hearted dreams
And of all the scattered shards of your pottery of schemes.

There upon the mantle stands the portrait of your heart
He has come upon an ending, so you have no place to start
A fire burning in the hearth, the ashes of your time
Blow with the breeze of fortune, but that such a crime?

Your cold steel eyes are staring now blindly out to sea
The salty tears that drown you in your memories of me
Cast your shimmered gaze upon me, lit by the dancing glow
I am yours for now and ever, yet you know that I must go.

As you close the door behind me I slowly drift away
The foggy trails of memory linger over this one day
You no longer hurl epithets, no longer feel your shame
No longer shunned by neighbours who darkly cursed your name.

Although I have journeyed on and now cannot return
There are no wrathful fires that consume you as they burn
For you have recast them in a corner of your soul
Where I reside forever with you, memory in full.
